The city of Guaymallén, where the graphic humorist Joaquín Lavado - better known as Quino- was born, lived his childhood, went to elementary school and got addicted to “Pancakes” Mendoza, will put his name to a future plaza and a sports center, but it will also take up the steps to complete the Quino Park, a project of the Central University of Venezuela and will be built on a site of the General Belgrano Railway, close to the capital of the province.

Mafalda's creator passed away on 30 last September in Mendoza and he was fired with innumerable expressions of affection in almost all the world, especially in this province that saw him born ago 88 years.

"Quino united us all", The mayor of Guaymallén told Télam today, Marcelino Iglesias, who promised to resume the negotiations with the Belgrano railway "to achieve the cession of the property or a loan of many years" and to be able to finalize the winning project of the Quino Park in Guaymallén.

Last week, the Deliberative Council of that commune of Greater Mendoza approved the appointment of Joaquín Salvador Lavado “Quino” to the new sports center located on Estrada and Cangallo streets, in the Unimev neighborhood; and to the plaza of the Torres del Sol neighborhood, in the town of Capilla del Rosario.

"Both appointments were approved unanimously since Quino united us all and neither Mafalda nor any of the other characters in the strip belong to anyone", the mayor said.

In March of 2018, Students from the Central University of Venezuela were left with the third edition of the Inter-American Development Bank Urban Lab contest, with a walk project designed on the former Belgrano railroad in Guaymallén, in homage to the famous Mendoza illustrator who was born and lived his childhood in this city.

At that time, Venezuelan architects received the 5000 dollars awarded by the contest under the watchful eye of Quino and director Juan José Campanella, present at the event.

“Here he met the famous Mendoza pancakes from the Mirayes expanadería, how much he commented that he missed and that we were able to invite him on the day of the event ", Iglesias recalled.

From Mendoza, the national deputy Omar De Marchi presented a bill to change the name of the Bicentennial Cultural Center to the Quino Cultural Center.

“Quino belongs to everyone, its peaceful name and unites. It was always above the cracks”, noted the legislator on his Twitter account.

"The park is planned and hopefully it can be carried out since it is in a space of the Belgrano railway and although they did us a temporary session, we have not yet finalized the final positioning or on loan ", sustained as Iglesias.

As this unlocks, the commune has already begun to clear and afforest “but we cannot advance further until it is defined… we are in decision limbo ", Iglesias was honest.

Meanwhile, relatives of the cartoonist who reside in Mendoza indicated today that "it is still a bit early to determine the final place of his remains and the isolation makes it difficult to make decisions in this regard".

In 1988, the comedian was declared "Illustrious Citizen as Master of Humor, Sensitivity and Justice of National and International Projection ”by the Municipality of Mendoza, who also gave him the key to the city.

Already entered the new millennium, in 2005, the Deliberative Council named Quino "Guest of Honor".
