Spanish poet Diego Doncel wins the Loewe Poetry Prize

The poet Diego Doncel was recognized for his work “Fragility”, with the Loewe Prize for Poetry 2020, one of the most recognized gender distinctions in the Spanish language, with a jury of prominent figures such as Gioconda Belli and Víctor García de la Concha and endowed with 25.000 euros.
According to what was cited by different media, like the EFE agency, the jury decided to recognize “Fragility” because it is a collection of poems “absolute, total, of an admirable vital and expressive maturity” and a book “very solid and very compact, both in substance and in form”.

In addition to the Doncel award (Cáceres, Spain, 1964) The award distinguished Mario Obrero with the Young Creation Award, a Spanish from 17 years, who wrote “Peachtree City”. In this way, the poet born in 2003, became the youngest in the history of the award.

The jury for this 33rd edition was made up of Gioconda Belli, Margo Glantz, Victor Garcia de la Concha, Antonio Colinas, Aurora egido, Juan Antonio González Iglesias, Carme riera, Jaime Siles, Luis Antonio de Villena and Aurora Luque, previous year's winner.

In its thirtieth edition, The award promoted by the Loewe Foundation had recognized in the Young Creation category the Argentine Luciana Reif (Buenos Aires, 1990) for his collection of poems “A home away from me”, while in its edition of the year 1990 the winner of the International Poetry Prize went to Bernardo Schiavetta from Córdoba.

This thirty-third edition had 31 finalists and the awards are scheduled for March 2021.

According to the information, this was the year where the most poems were presented: a total of 1247 authors, from 36 countries and one out of every four Latin American proposals were from Mexico, Argentina and Colombia.
