In honor of Los Wawancó, seek to establish National Cumbia Day
Through a virtual act that featured the main exponents of the tropical genre, a project will be presented that will seek to institutionalize the 9 November as National Cumbia Day.
The chosen date is no coincidence, since it commemorates the 65 years since the first live performance of Los Wawancó, pioneer group in our country of this popular genre.
The initiative has the endorsement of more than 80 artists of groups and references of the tropical scene, among which appear Los Palmeras, Antonio Rios, Lia Crucet, The Imperial Quartet, Love Blue, Jambao, Group Shadows and Adrián and The Black Dice, among others.
At the meeting, which can be followed by the Facebook accounts of Cumbia de la Pura and the Federal Platform of Culture, The Costa Rican Mario Castellón will also be present, founder of Los Wawancó, and the historical pianist of the group, Miguel Loubet.
The proposed date for the celebration responds to the anniversary of the day of 1955 in which Castellón brought together musicians from Colombia, Chile and Peru to animate a wedding in La Plata, en lo que dio inicio a una agrupación que pocos años más tarde alcanzaría gran popularidad con su éxito “El pescador”.
Many times ignored by some sectors of culture, Cumbia knew how to reflect throughout its history the feelings of the popular classes, who adopted this genre as one of their favorites.
