Films that have only been released and screened in drive-ins can compete for Oscars, from some changes established in the regulations by the Hollywood Academy as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

But nevertheless, in the modification decided yesterday, the organization maintained the requirement that the tape must remain on the bill for at least one week, with regular screenings, in the cities of Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Miami o Atlanta, to aspire to fight for a prized statuette, according to the agency EFE.

Until now, It was only allowed to compete if the film had been shown in a theater in those cities, during that period, in an open struggle by the Academy to maintain tradition against the new way of releasing films on digital platforms without going to the big screen.

In this sense, it should be remembered that in the last edition, filmes como “the Irish”, Martin Scorsese; O “Historia de un matrimonio”, released on Netflix, they had to meet this requirement to be eligible for a statuette.

Months ago, the new pace that the pandemic imposed on the film industry had forced the Academy to introduce other modifications, such as allowing competition from films released only on digital platforms but which were planning to hit theaters in the future.

Hasta nuevo aviso, and only for the 93 edition of the Awards, movies that had a theatrical release planned, but before they are available in a digital broadcast service -streaming-, may be eligible for the best film categories, los apartados generales y de especialidad”, read the statement issued on that occasion.

The pandemic had also already forced the organization to postpone the awards ceremony for the 25 April 2021.
