Manu Quieto: "The album is made for these times"
This Friday 28 of August, La Mancha de Rolando presents "The revolution of joy" through digital platforms, his new job record. In that context, the singer and guitarist of the group, Manu Quieto analyzes it together with The sidewalk.
The first thing that comes to mind is the name of the album, well-known slogan belonging to the previous government. The similarity is accepted by the musician, who adopted it as an "irony", but that beyond all that "it is something that we all need and that comes from the hand of the new songs".
For Quieto, the brand new melodies "are very positive", product of a disc that was finalized before the advance of COVID-19. "We finished doing it at the beginning of the year, we did not know that this was going to happen "he says, but at the same time he takes out his chest and expresses that “once again it seems that the musicians are anticipating what is coming because, because the album seems made for these times ".
It should be added that it is a very special album for the group since it is the first they make for the Pirca Records label., by Cristian Merchot.
How was the process of making the album?
Hard, took much of 2019. We did it very calm, taking our time. It could have even come out in November, but we brought it until August to give it technical touches, make videos, videolyrics, do things to him. But it could have come out even before December.
For a generation of musicians that was born, grew up and sucked records constantly, What does it mean to edit it in digital format? Is there the same feeling or does nostalgia win?
It is what is happening in the world now. We have attended the wake and burial of the physical disk a few years ago, which I suffered a lot. Now it's past and it comes out like this, in this format. Maybe later some vinyl copies can be made, I don't know some 500. But it is difficult because it is an important investment and it is not justified to make people spend so much money. Not the idea.
It's not the same feeling, but we are used to being people who deal with the tangible. If you can't touch something, it's very difficult for you to get used to it quickly., because we come from a time when we bought the album, we had it and you could touch it. It's like money, cryptocurrencies, the bitcoin, paypal or home banking ... it's not paper money, but you can buy things just the same.
Before "The revolution of joy" there was an acoustic plate, being "We will win" (2015) the band's last studio work so far. Passed 5 years of this - the longest period between record and record -. "We take the acoustic as one more production of La Mancha, because it has two new songs and it has an audiovisual treatment that took a lot of work and is good ”the musician begins to explain and in turn affirms that“ several songs have accumulated for us ”.
"The acoustic album would not have released, I would have preferred an album with new songs. But everything had been complicated, also the situation of the country and we realized that it was better to keep the songs and make an album with well-known songs, so that in this way another type of repercussion is generated, nostalgia ... it was not my intention, but as a strategy it was not bad ", completed Quiet.
How would you shred the album? What climates will the listener travel through?
You have to listen to it and you will realize that we did it very varied, with a lot of styles and a lot of themes. They are very happy rhythms, no dips. It's a very positive album, but you have to listen to it. I like it because it has several styles of themes, some faster, others slower, different themes, instrumentation ... I like to let some time pass and be able to analyze it. What I like about this one is that we made the songs very different and all very catchy, as you remember them fast.
How do you prepare perhaps for the strangest presentation you will have of an album?
I think everything can be touched, although we will surely play about four, because there are other songs that we have to review that do not leave the list of songs. We also speak hypothetically, for when all this happens and the shows come back. We calculate April, May ... we have no illusions to play before those months, so we will surely continue recording new songs.
Perhaps this is a way of coping with isolation since, as detailed by the musician, La Mancha de Rolando continues like this, "We touch, we do acoustic songs, we revert old songs or participate in projects with other groups ", as Manu tells. In turn, he announced that the band "plans to record a new album, to do it little by little ".
Will there be online concerts? Can you advance something?
They have offered us many possibilities to do so and we are analyzing it. It still doesn't seem to me, I prefer to wait for the live show. I don't really like the idea of playing in front of the cameras and that people pay the entrance fee from their home. I still see it a little green. Play in a room, in a studio and have people buy a virtual ticket and watch it on a computer, a TV or a telephone ... I don't know if technically it will work out, yes it will be heard well.
It all depends on the connectivity of the people, like distance education. It gives me the feeling that it is not for everyone, only for those with good technology. That's why I don't like it so much. In the future I don't know what will happen, but for now we are reluctant beyond the proposals.
What will be the first thing you will do once the isolation ends?
The musicians, actors and other artists we are waiting to know when we will return to the streets, to stage, outdoor. We don't know what the future will be like, therefore I don't want to think too much. I want to play live, I want to visit my friends from other countries and from other provinces, who we visit on each tour. That's the first thing that comes to mind, not much more.
You have to be confident and meanwhile dedicate yourself to creative processes, recording-related tasks, the painting, writing. I'm not going to lie to you that I miss concerts, I miss a lot but I see the good side and I dedicate myself to other activities.
