Researcher María Amalia García will be the new chief curator of Malba

Art historian and researcher at Conicet María Amalia García was appointed as chief curator of the Museum of Latin American Art (Painting) And as of June, he will be in charge of the institution's program of temporary exhibitions..

García will be the maximum artistic authority of Malba for the next few months, until the appointment of him or the replacement of the Venezuelan researcher Gabriela Rangel, who in the last two years served as artistic director of the space and decided to resign from her position last April.

Born in 1975, She has a doctorate and a degree in Art History (UBA), also teacher and researcher at Conicet. Latin American Modern Art Specialist, his lines of research propose comparative approaches, cultural networks and regional interactions. His appointment comes after the departure of Victoria Giraudo in November 2020.

She has served as associate curator of the Museum of Modern Art of Buenos Aires. In 2019 She was an advisory curator of the exhibition South Modern: Journeys of Abstraction-The Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Gift, organized by Inés Katzenstein in The Museum of Modern Art, New York and on 2021 co-curated with Marcelo E. Pacheco and Javier Villa show the “Alberto Greek: How big you are!” at the Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires. She is the author, among other books, of “Abstract art. Cultural exchanges between Argentina and Brazil” (XXI century, 2011) translated into English as Abstract Crossings: Cultural Exchange between Argentina and Brazil (University of California Press, 2019).

From 1 of June, the specialist will be responsible for conducting the program of temporary exhibitions, to implement different strategies to disseminate the museum's collection that this year celebrates two decades and will also have to coordinate projects that improve the virtual experience of visitors and their link with the museum's heritage.

I am very grateful to join the Malba team to contribute with my knowledge to deepen and diversify the readings on the works, artists and their contexts”, García highlights in a statement released by the museum.

“The Argentine academic and curatorial circuit is recognized for its great professionalism; I am proud to be part of this community. Personally, also, my incorporation to Malba has a special meaning: an important recognition of my career by the institution in which I worked during 2002 Y 2003 as a curatorial assistant”, limits.

As part of your role, María Amalia García will also be a member of the Museum's Artistic Committee, which is currently formed by Gonzalo Aguilar (UBA-Unsam / Conicet), Andrea Giunta (UBA / Conicet), Adriano Pedrosa (MASP, Brazil), Juliet Gonzalez (independent curator, Mexico) and Octavio Zaya (independent curator, resides in New York).
