To celebrate your day, key meeting for the dissemination of Folklore

On the occasion of Folklore Day, Minister of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires, Enrique Avogadro and the president of the National Academy of Folklore, Antonio Rodriguez Villar, will sign a framework collaboration agreement on Saturday 22 August at 17 in a virtual meeting.

The result of this agreement is a series of actions that the General Directorate of Music, by Juan Manuel Beati, will begin to move forward starting with the launch of the “Atahualpa Yupanqui” Song Contest and the television program “Folklore at home” on the City Channel, in addition to other training and heritage projects that are under development.

In relation to the Contest, it is its first edition, it will be totally free and with national scope. As of Tuesday, September 1, registration will be open. It will be aimed at lyricists and composers who will be able to present up to three unpublished songs inspired by folklore from any part of our country. The Bases and Conditions may be consulted at: www.buenosaires.gob.ar/cultura/musica.

With the auspices of the Argentine Society of Authors and Composers-SADAIC, the Argentine Association of Interpreters-AADI, the National Institute of Music-INAMU, National Folkloric Radio and the Argentine Union of Musicians-SADEM, the contest will deliver through a qualified jury, three awards, y siete menciones especiales a las mejores canciones.

Meanwhile, the program “Folklore at home” will start 6 of September. It is a weekly cycle of meetings with different referents of the national folklore, in the warm atmosphere of their homes. An intimate chat to share experiences, anecdotes, music and folk art. With the conduction of Victoria Casaurang, “Folklore at Home” will air every Sunday at 21, through the City Canal. Los dos primeros programas contarán con figuras como Antonio Tarrago Ros el domingo 6 September and Marián Farías Gómez on Sunday 13 of September.

DOCUMENTARY “ÁBALOS, AN HISTORY ABOUT 5 HERMANOS

Also as a celebration for Folklore Day, BA Audiovisual, the support program for the audiovisual sector belonging to the Impulso Cultural platform, will present on Saturday 22 de agosto el documentalÁbalos, an history about 5 brothers”, by Josefina Zavalía Ábalos. It can be seen through Cultura en Casa, starting at 12, y por el Canal de la Ciudad, to 14.

With the spirit of rock and the essence of folklore, their 88 years, the legendary bombisto, Vitillo Abalos, member of Los Hermanos Ábalos begins an adventure: recover the music of his brothers together with artists of different genres and generations.

The film has guests like Raly Barrionuevo, Jaime Torres, Juanjo Dominguez, Jimmy Rip, The Time Bomb, Ciro and the Persians, Roger Waters, among others. And Vitillo leaves his last legacy and message: “No se ama lo que no se conoce”.

The documentary, that has the support of Impulso Cultural, a través de Mecenazgo del Ministerio de Cultura de la Ciudad, was released in 2018, with the presence of Vitillo Ábalos, after its avant-premiere at the Mar del Plata International Film Festival, throughout the country and in France, with the accompaniment of bombers who paid tribute to his career. It won the award for Best Documentary Film at the Punta del Este International Festival and other awards and mentions.

Natives of Santiago del Estero, The Ábalos Brothers were the creators of the renowned Quebradeño Carnavalito; Waving handkerchiefs; Santiago nostalgia. The quintet was active for more than 60 years and is the oldest of Argentine folk music, and one of the oldest in Latin America. They appeared in front of two Popes – Paul VI (1971) and John Paul II (1984) -, with Louis Armstrong, and they even shared a TV show with The Beatles in Japan.
