Why is International Reggae Day celebrated today?

They already passed 26 years since that July 1994, date on which International Reggae Day was first celebrated. However, What was the reason for this celebration?

Without a doubt this genre has captivated and cultivated millions of followers around the world., thanks to his message of inspiration and union between people. Created in Jamaica, Bob Marley is the undisputed number 1 of this type of music, influencing a large number of musicians who continued their extraordinary legacy.

It all started from the speech that Winnie Mandela (Back then First Lady of South Africa) toasted in Kingston, Jamaican capital, referring to the rhythm that “gave encouragement, inspires and unites "the South African people in the fight against Apartheid.

Today, the celebration was installed worldwide and there are several countries that carry out festivals, exhibitions and talks, like some of the great amount of activities that are carried out.

It should be remembered that years later -2018 to be exact- UNESCO declared reggae as Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Besides Marley, this style of music carries great exponents of the stature of Peter Tosh, Gregory Isaacs, Jimmy Cliff, Toots and The Maytals y Steel Pulse, among several others.
