Un poco de historia

The collector Isaac Fernández Blanco commissioned in 1901 to the Norwegian architect Alejandro Christophersen the expansion and remodeling of the family home, where he founded the first private museum in Argentina opening the doors of his own residence, in what is now considered the only eclectic-style mansion from the end of the 19th century that remains in the old southern neighborhood of Montserrat and with the characteristics of a neo-Renaissance mansion.

In september 1921, Fernández Blanco moved his family to another address and opened his house as a permanent museum for the entire community, vendió el edificio a la Municipalidad de Buenos Aires y donó la totalidad de su colección a dicho gobierno, opening as a municipal museum on 25 May 1922. Fernández Blanco remained as Honorary Director until 1926.

The Golden Room and the Creole Painting and Silverware Room were renovated and enhanced thanks to a subsidy granted to the Association of Friends of the Fernández Blanco Museum by the American Express International Foundation., via The Resource Foundation of the United States.
