"The sword and the cross" proposes to show values and imaginaries present in the Museum's collection, that subsist in contemporary subjectivities. Delves into the foundations on which culture is built, political forms and subjectivities of Argentine society. It brings together a selection of works produced by artists in Argentina from the sixties to the present, such as Liliana Maresca, Diana Aisenberg, Pablo Suarez, Norberto Goméz, Diego Bianchi and Luciana Lamothe, among others. It is curated by Guadalupe Chirotarrab and Laura Códega.

This exhibition of contemporary art adds to the collection of religious and war images, courtly paintings, weapons, hangings, altarpieces and furniture from 16th to 18th century Spain that houses the museum. Its objective is to rediscover and dialogue with the Museum's collection, and promote new readings on the foundations of a colonial Spanish-American culture.

"It is a huge joy, that little by little, let's go back to recover spaces dedicated to art and culture. Thanks to the improvement in the pandemic situation, today we can present the first exhibition of the year at the Larreta Museum. During these difficult times, the importance of culture for the containment of people and society was demonstrated. With all the corresponding health protocols, we continue with the reactivation of the cultural circuit of the City ”.- highlights Enrique Avogadro, Minister of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires.

“We are very proud of this exhibition that shows the classic collection of the museum, dialoguing with the contemporary art of twenty-seven creators. The sword and the cross will allow the younger generations to get closer to Larreta, know and enjoy the cultural, artistic and architectural legacy that the museum has along with the work of these artists ”.- added Vivi Cantoni, undersecretary of cultural management of the city of Buenos Aires.

Due to its critical capacity, contemporary art encourages aesthetic experience and the possibility of thinking about ways of life and even the function of art within the social framework.. The exhibition puts architecture in dialogue, objects and images of the past with artistic expressions of the present. This exhibition can be read from the dimensions that cross the various works that make it up: the future of the social body, the persistence of the symbol, the physical body as a source of enjoyment and pain, the vulnerability of meat, the biographical as reflection of the subject in its environment and the omnipresence of power structures in the development of human life.

The Eduardo Sívori Plastic Arts Museum participates in the exhibition, Stones Gallery, Nora Fisch Gallery, Ruth Benzacar Gallery of Contemporary Art and the Bruzzone collections, Mauro and Luz Herlitzka, Esteban Tedesco, Amalia amoedo, Eduardo and Cecilia Mallea, Ary Nosovitzky y Silvina Parraglia.
