The Fine Arts celebrates Torres García with an exceptional exhibition
The National Museum of Fine Arts will present starting Thursday 28 November the exhibition “Joaquín Torres García. Trial and conviction, a tribute to the Uruguayan artist in the 150 anniversary of his birth.
The exhibition will include about 80 pieces, between paintings, drawings, engravings, Illustrations, toys and calligraphic books that reflect the breadth of his artistic and theoretical legacy.
Curated by María Cristina Rossi, The proposal covers different stages in the life of Torres García, highlighting works carried out during his stays in Barcelona, Paris, New York and Montevideo. Among the pieces exhibited are nine paintings that are part of the museum's collection, along with others from public and private collections in Argentina.
The director of the National Museum of Fine Arts, Andrés Duprat, highlighted the importance of this exhibition to commemorate the career of a fundamental artist in the art of Latin America, whose work and thought achieved international relevance. As explained, Torres García's work not only impacted due to its plastic and conceptual depth, but also for the impulse it gave to collective projects and spaces for reflection that influenced later generations..
Curator Rossi explained that the exhibition begins with the artist's first graphic works., as illustrations for books and magazines, and covers a variety of disciplines in which he sought new forms of expression. further, underlined the human dimension of the artist, who managed to overcome various creative and vital challenges to transform his work into a tool of cultural change and Latin American projection.
The exhibition can be visited until 16 March 2025 in the rooms on the first floor of the museum located on Avenida del Libertador 1473. Visiting hours will be from Tuesday to Friday between 11 and the 19.30 hours, while on weekends it will be open 10 a 19.30 hours.
